A bit of history ...

Did you know that hemp was one of the first plants cultivated by mankind? Used for thousands of years for its fibres, seeds and medicinal properties, it dates back over 10,000 years! In ancient times, it was already highly prized in Asia and the Middle East for treating various ailments. As for CBD, it was only in the 20th century that scientists isolated this molecule and discovered its non-psychoactive effects. Today, it is a leading ingredient in natural cosmetics for its multiple benefits.

The history of CBD in cosmetics

The use of CBD (cannabidiol) in cosmetics began to gain popularity in the 2010s, but its appearance dates back to the growing awareness of the benefits of hemp in skincare in the early 2000s.

Debut in the 2000s

Hemp, the plant from which CBD is extracted, has already been used in cosmetics for its moisturising properties, thanks to hemp seed oil.

However, this oil does not contain CBD. The first scientific explorations into cannabidiol and its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are beginning to generate interest in dermatological applications.

Explosion in the 2010s

With the legalisation of cannabis for medical and recreational purposes in certain countries (such as the United States and Canada), CBD, which does not contain THC (the psychoactive substance), is beginning to be perceived as a safe and beneficial ingredient.

Properties of CBD in cosmetics

Antioxidant

CBD has a dual antioxidant action : direct and indirect. It acts directly on reactive oxygen species by capturing free radicals or transforming them into less active forms, prevents the formation of superoxide radicals and also reduces the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by chelating transition metal ions. Finally, CBD acts indirectly by changing the level and activity of antioxidants, thereby modifying the redox balance. Through its dual action, direct and indirect, CBD has powerful antioxidant activity, notably much greater (30-50%) than α-tocopherol or vitamin C. It combats the free radicals responsible for premature skin ageing. By combating external aggressors (pollution, UV rays, etc.), it preserves the skin's natural radiance and slows the appearance of the signs of ageing.

Sebo-regulator

CBD is particularly appreciated for its rebalancing effect. It inhibits in a dose-dependent manner the lipogenic action of anandamide, an endocannabinoid internal to our body. This action appears to be universal, at least on other known lipogenic factors such as testosterone. It also inhibits sebocyte proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. By helping to regulate sebum production, CBD on the skin reduces excess shine and blemishes. Ideal for oily skin or skin prone to breakouts, it gently purifies the skin.

Moisturizer

CBD has a natural ability to strengthen the skin barrier. By stimulating sphingomyelinase and increasing ceramide levels, it strengthens the structure of the epidermis while preserving skin moisture. It therefore promotes long-lasting hydration, ideal for dry or dehydrated skin. An essential ally for soft, supple skin!

Anti-inflammatory

CBD is also known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory action. It interacts with the ECS (endocannabinoid) system in the skin, regulating inflammatory responses. It inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, the molecules responsible for inflammatory skin reactions. CBD on the skin reduces redness and relieves irritation, making it an ingredient of choice for skin that is sensitive, prone to inflammation or suffering from skin diseases.

CBD helps to improve the texture and elasticity of the skin, making it smoother and softer.

Is CBD legal?

CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are two cannabinoids derived from cannabis, but they have very different effects. CBD is recognised for its soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits, without causing psychotropic effects. In other words, CBD does not alter the mind and is widely used in natural cosmetics and wellness products for its beneficial properties for the skin and body. 🌿

By contrast, THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, responsible for the “high” or euphoric effect. Unlike CBD, THC is illegal in many countries due to its effects on the central nervous system. ❌
